Event Description
TWENTY-ONE LIGHT YEARS

Twenty-One Light Years is a play about six people who take the MyCiti bus.  It is a journey through the thoughts and feelings of common people. It takes a harder look at the stranger beside you. What lies beneath the surface while we are on this ride called life? What do you see if you use your peripheral vision? Buy your ticket and find out. On this wonderful planet there are gnomes and flamingos. There are ringing telephones, Elvis impersonators and second hand shoes.  But most of all there is us and our experience of it all.

Writers note: I wrote ‘Twenty-one Light years’ for the second year students at Act Cape Town to give them a massive learning experience in ensemble. I tried to create a play that requires every one to work together and dictates that every one is equal.  Who knows, if we can do it on stage and create magic in our make believe world, perhaps one day we could do it in the real world.

Nicola Hanekom

Director’s note: I am honoured to be directing the talented ACT second year students in the writings of the profound and poetic, Nicola Hanekom. I love this play as it allows the audience to listen in on the secret inner world of the characters, without any barriers. How often do we really get inside the heads of others? How strange and wonderful we truly all are.
